Obesity is a global health problem associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) contains bioactive compounds, particularly catechins, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), caffeine, and L theanine, which may exert anti-obesity effects. This research aims to examine the mechanisms of green tea in obesity prevention and management based on current research findings. A literature review approach was used to analyze relevant research articles. The findings indicate that green tea may reduce obesity risk through several mechanisms, including suppression of inflammation and oxidative stress, modulation of gut microbiota, improvement of insulin sensitivity, enhancement of lipid metabolism, increased fat oxidation, and stimulation of thermogenesis. Furthermore, green tea consumption has been associated with reductions in body weight, body fat, waist circumference, and body mass index in overweight and obese individuals. Therefore, green tea has potential as a nutritional intervention to support obesity prevention and management.
